Smart & Sustainable Cities Program

In 2018,  Regen50 was approach by Metroplan & Royal Danish Embassy to facilitate the Smart and Sustainable Cities Program between the City of Tshwane, South Africa, and the City of Aarhus, Denmark.

The purpose of the workshop was to identify and align key group concerns and describe the necessary actions needed to unlock possibilities for improving a target urban environment. During the Smart and Sustainable Cities cooperative workshop, the stakeholders in the City of Tshwane and the City of Aarhus came together over a period of three days to discuss what possibilities could be unlocked for South Africa.

During this time the group followed a change process starting with the end in mind for each of the four previously identifiee urban themes.  Using Lean techniques and Open Space Technology, the group were able to identify a series of aspirational group challenges or goals, and map actionable steps towards a desired future state. The group also identified possible learning and knowledge experiments to try out.

During this co-creative process,  participants migrate across the topical areas to where their interest and expertise would bring the most value. Each theme was described in collective knowledge about the topic, including current states, major concerns, the desired new states and the experimental opportunities or project possibilities that would allow change activities for the urban region to be tested.

The purpose of the workshop in Theory of Change was to set a trajectory for the two cities to identify worthwhile pursuits and identify actionable collaborative actions to take.
